March 4, 2008 - Empennage Fairing

On the right side, the lower and upper fairings butted against each other OK, but I still needed to do something about the section I had cut off. 

 

Although I havn't done much glass work, I decided to just go for it.  I taped some clear plastic to the horizontal stabilizer and to the fuse side so the epoxy wouldn't stick where I didn't want it sticking.  Then I cut three rectangular sections of fiberglass cloth and saturated them with epoxy, then laid them down on the fairing and HS.  There is a compound curve there and I wasn't sure how the glass cloth would do.  I was amazed when it magically conformed to the compound curve.  All I did was press down on it with some foam.  To wrap it up, I laid a couple of pieces of "peel-ply" down on top.  First time I've ever used that; I'm curious to see how it works.  It's supposed to soak up the excess epoxy and make the resulting finish very smooth.
